I live in a nation that holds to the myth that it wanted it's immigrants from all over the word, the truth is a lot different.
When the English, French, Spanish, and Dutch first came to these shore the North American natives took one look at these crazy guys what the f*** is wrong with these guys.
Peter Stuyvesant as governor of New Ampsterdam, said no Jews allowed.
In those early colonial, the Britsh eyed the French with suspicion and like wise the French eyed the English the same way, and they both looked on the Spanish the way.
Now the colonist welcomed Africans with opened arms, the only problem with that was the Africans didn't want to be in America. (Well to be fair there were some Africans who came here of their own free will. They were looked at with suspicion. )
When the war of independence from England was taking place all foreigners who wanted to fight for the cause were welcomed.
After the war and independence was won there came a time of general exceptence of foreiners untill the 1830 were a group of no nothing's wanted to keep the German Catholics out.
And then the citizens with background from Enland wanted to keep the Irish out. Next those who called themselves Irish Americans wanted to keep the Italians out.
Everybody mistrusted the Eastern Europeons, wanting to keep them no matter what their relgion was.
There was a wave of Asian (Chinese)worker that the railroads said they needed, but after a while prejudice prevailed and a stringent imagination policy against Asians was passed. ( fortunately for us this has gone away for we Americans like their food and brains).
Now we come to those new immigrants from South America who want to come into the US, and guess what, there running into the same BS we all did.
So now you have it, a brief bias history of American immigration.
